3500 years ago, about 600,000 men on foot marched south out of the area later known as Rameses, (RAM-eh-sees) an ancient town south of today’s Cairo, Egypt. (That number could easily have swelled to 1-2 million people when you add in the uncounted women and children.) Pharaoh had come to the Israelites in the middle of the night, urging them to leave so quickly they didn’t even have time to properly prepare food for themselves. Their mainstay of daily bread was a sourdough-like bread was didn't have time to rise. So they just packed the lump of raw dough on their backs and headed out into the desert, depending on God's promises and His provision.More...

04/06 On The Jericho Road...   Audio

This is an absolutely incredible time of the year for every single person alive on the planet!  We have the awesome opportunity to seek out and follow in the footsteps of Jesus the Christ, the Son of God, as He approached Jerusalem for His final days on this earth. This week we will follow Jesus as He passed through the ancient town of Jericho, probably the oldest continually inhabited city in the entire world.

My father and I visited the ancient city in 1998 during a tour of the Holy Land. There is a picture in the Jericho Album included here that I took from atop the Temptation Monastery overlooking the ancient city. We traveled from Jerusalem east about 17 miles down to the Jericho area. And down it is! You start out about 220 feet above sea level on a winding, narrow road, and in 15-20 minutes, you are over 800 feet below sea level, not far from the Dead Sea.

Yes, April Fools’ Day is coming up this Tuesday. While it seems like just an innocent day to have a little fun, beware! The joke may be on us!

Day in and day out, week after week, month after month, year after year, we just seem to fall right in line with a lot of craziness created by the world. And we don’t even give it a second thought. For instance, who knows where April Fools’ Day came from in the first place? Or should I ask, who even cares?

Well, I tried to look it up online at a gazillion sites. I finally decided it wasn’t worth the effort. Nobody, but nobody, knows for sure where it came from! Here’s a couple of explanations that sort of stood out from the rest. One is that it was originally a “Hilaria” Festival in ancient Rome, which evolved to our present “Hilarity Day” of April 1.

Another is that April Fools’ Day began in the 1500s when the Gregorian calendar replaced the Julian. Folks who kept on celebrating the old calendar’s New Year, which was April 1, were ridiculed as “April Fools” because they forgot or just ignored the fact that the world had now been handed a brand new calendar, with January 1 as New Year’s Day.

(The picture illustration is from a “Sonrise Service" overlooking the lake at Fontana Dam, NC)

I have been mulling over how to start today’s lesson for a long time. Where does one begin when sharing the breathtaking physical majesty and utter brilliance of the handiwork of God Almighty! The subject is so absolutely limitless! He’s God!!!! And, oh, the multitude and magnitude of the lessons yet to be learned! It’s absolutely incredible how our physical world and our spiritual world resonate together, totally in sync!

Well, I am at a loss no more. I just watched a video, that I will call “Play Me, I’m Yours” on Facebook. (http://youtu.be/rRfxDj-R1kc) That phrase “Play Me, I’m Yours” was plastered across a piano just sitting in the middle of a busy airport. A little boy sat down and began to play. And I mean, play. He was tearing that piano apart! But folks just kept walking by, dragging their luggage, intent on their schedule and final destination. More...

03/16/2014 When Their Sadness Was Turned Into Joy   Audio

(This image of the aftermath of 9/11 is in the public domain in the US because it is a work prepared by an officer or employee of the US Government as part of that person’s official duties under the terms of Title 17, Chapter 1, Section 105 of the US Code. So it can be used to illustrate our lesson today)

As a nation, we should have learned our lesson ...by now. When faced with national disaster, like this fireman in the picture, we should have thrown up our hands, looked toward heaven and yelled for the help of God Almighty! We haven't. But God is giving us yet another chance through His timeless Word.

(The picture illustration is around 1956 at my Dad's first fulltime church in Slayden, Mississippi. I am the little girl in the front left, dressed in pink. The church behind us stands out in my memory as one of several I was mistakenly locked in, alone, at night.)

“I tell you that one greater than the temple is here.” Matthew 12:6. When Jesus said this in reply to the Pharisees who were accusing Him of doing something unlawful on the Sabbath, His reply rocked their religious world. He blew apart every sacrificial concept they had of their temple and their Sabbath, what we call today our  “church” and our “Sunday”.

(Photo of February’s Snow Moon taken on the evening of February 13, from the base of Yellow Creek Mountains near Fontana Dam, NC. February's full moon is appropriately known as the Snow Moon because of heavy snowfalls that can occur during the month. So you can see this is a timely photo. Can anyone identify the other object in the night sky?)

It’s been an absolutely amazing spiritual journey to be on God’s timeline for almost an entire year now. The lessons He has taught us have certainly not been what you’d expect. Far from the popular notion of a sermon series geared to the individual needs and lifestyles of 21st century Christianity... More...

Yes, I know a lot of us Christians think that many Old Testament subjects are just simply history and don’t really apply to us.  But, really, we all need a reminder that physical Babylon still exists as a province of central  Iraq.

With a population of 1.727 million people, this Babylonian Province located in central Iraq, stretches 1976 square miles and includes the ancient biblical city of Babylon. Located along the Euphrates River about 50-60 miles south of Baghdad, Babylon was one of the first cities in the world, founded by Nimrod, the great-grandson of Noah ... More...

Well, here’s a picture of our latest round of winter storms in the mountains of western North Carolina. All week long, I’ve read Facebook posts from folks who were just plain bored or decided to party their way through it all. Of course, everyone does have a choice in how they respond. When Je...sus faced some rough times, He chose to withdraw from the craziness of life, and ponder what His Father had in store for Him in the future. In His case, this period of retreat would keep Him on The Almighty’s timeline, focused on God’s appointments in the closing days of His life. Perhaps we need to concede that God has appointments for us, too. It’s also true that we could be in the closing days of our lives and just don’t know it. More...

Winters around here can be agonizingly long and just plain hard. Our little church closes for the winter season, and many times I find that I have to talk to myself just to stay focused.

Thank the Good Lord there are some really great things that can happen in the middle of everything. Like Jonathan Peoples, our Rec Director here at Fontana Village Resort, who recently posted a Facebook photo of a few snowflakes attached to the metal table on his porch. Their singular crystalline beauty “wowed” me right away. In the middle of my doldrums, I began praising God for His attention to detail, sadly admitting that I really hadn’t really seen the whole picture of what was going on right under my nose. (Or should I say under my feet, in my hair and eyes and creeping into my socks and boots.)  I hope today’s lesson will be like that for you. More...

(Today's lesson is illustrated by a picture that I took from the top of Cheoah Bald in Graham County, NC.  At 5,062 feet it is known as the “Grandstand of the Appalachians” along the Appalachian Trail)

You don’t get very far in the Bible before you find this earth shaking statement of the Lord God to Abraham 4000 years ago. It is still in effect today. And it affects each and every one of us in every single nation who has lived or will ever live on the planet Earth since Abraham.

01/26 $3 WORTH OF GOD: I AM THE LORD Audio

"I would like to buy three dollars' worth of God, please. Not enough to explode my soul or disturb my sleep, but just enough to equal a cup of warm milk, or a snooze in the sunshine... I want ecstasy, not transformation. I want the warmth of the womb, not a new birth. I want a pound of the eternal in a paper sack. I would like to buy three dollars’ worth of God, please" by Wilbur Reese.

When the Almighty delivered the Israelites from Egypt in the Exodus, He repeated this same phrase over and over again. “I am the Lord your God.” And He set about teaching this to every generation of mankind through His powerful Word.

But you know how it is with us prideful, self-righteous humans. We just seem to want to learn the hard way. In today’s Bible lesson, we see nations defying God over and over again. And we witness the judgment of God on each and every one of them in the lessons of Ezekiel. Refer to the map link of the kingdoms around Israel and Judah.

Ammon was a country to the north-east of Judah, on the edge of the desert that is east of the Jordan River. The chief city was Rabbath-Ammon, which is today’s modern city of Amman, Jordan.

1/12/14 PUT THE POT ON THE FIRE (Audio above)

“The word of the Lord came to me. This was on the tenth day of the tenth month in the ninth year of exile. He said, Son of man, write today’s date and this note: ‘On this date the army of the king of Babylon surrounded Jerusalem.’” Ezekiel 24:1-2 ERV.

It was mid-January, probably around 588 BC when Ezekiel followed God’s command and wrote down these words. In fact, today, January 12, 2014, is the 2600th year or so anniversary date for the beginning of the siege of Jerusalem by Babylon.

1/5/14 You Are My Sheep, the Sheep of My Pasture (Audio above)

This year has been an absolutely amazing journey in God’s Word. There is never a question about where we need to be or what we need to see. Each month He refocuses us on scripture of His own perfect choosing.  The lessons are always timely, prophetic and humbling. There is something bigger than our organized religion and church going on here. We are beginning to see the real Jesus.

However, many of us choose to follow the grand and glorious imitation of Jesus.  We believe that it’s okay to choose our own timing and direction in ministries, and that all there is to being a Christian is being empowered, chosen and loved. More...

12/29 I Am the Gate For The Sheep (Audio above)

2000 years ago during this season on God’s calendar, Jesus answered a very important question. The question was this:  “…If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” John 10:22.

His answer should “rattle our cage” for the rest of our days. Here’s what He said. “…I did tell you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me, but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.  I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.   More...

12/22 We Saw His Star When It Rose (Audio above)
(Photo of our church and garden by Susan Peoples. The star is real!)

Right now, the last minute frenzy of gift buying, travel planning, and family get-to-gathers is upon us.  Christmas is supposed to be a special season about the birth of Jesus. But most of the time we miss Him because we’re looking in all the wrong places. The Magi, we call Wise Men, knew that.  They looked toward the heavens and followed a star to find Jesus. Perhaps we should look toward the heavens and "set your minds on things that are above, not on earthly things.” Colossians 3:2.

“After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, ‘Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.’" Matthew 2:1-2.

12/15 If You Are the Christ, Tell Us Plainly  (Audio Above)
(Picture from His Garden of Grace)

Today, we Christians are struggling to keep Christ in Christmas. We all are enduring the politically correct, verbal onslaught of “Happy Holidays”. We hear it over and over again as the cash registers ring like “silver bells”. Small wonder that our terse replies of “Merry Christmas” to frazzled store clerks are most often delivered as war cries, not blessings in the birth of Jesus.  And we are further tested as Christmas manger scenes are being removed from public places- OUR places, that OUR tax dollars helped buy!  Again, our Christian “rights” rise in indignation. 12/8 We Have Heard That God Is With You (Audio above)

(Pictured here is a scripture memorial from His Garden of Grace, illustrating Zechariah 8:3-5. It is a memorial from Ernie Stiles, Jr. to his sister, Melissa Stiles Whitaker.)

The time was December 7, 518 B.C. The scene was the decimated Holy City of Jerusalem and Solomon’s Temple, laying in burned out ruins for over 70 years. It had been a long two years since the reconstruction of the Temple had begun. All that remained of the nation of Israel was the previously exiled southern kingdom of Judah, allowed by the Babylonians to return home to Jerusalem and rebuild.  The story begins as some of the returned exiles, now living in the neighboring city of Bethel, send a delegation to Jerusalem to ask the prophets and priests to ask an important question. “Should I mourn and fast in the fifth month, as I have done for so many years?” Zechariah 7:3.

12/1 Now One Greater Than Solomon Is Here

Pictured here are my family and I, and our tour bus friends, when we visited Jerusalem in 2002. We are standing on top of the Mount of Olives, and behind us are the city and walls of Old Jerusalem, glistening in beauty and history. It also is glistening because of the golden “Dome of the Rock”, a Muslim shrine built here, atop Mount Moriah, some 1300 years ago.

Easily the most hotly contested and desired real estate in the entire world, Mount Moriah’s history is literally, out of this world. Around 4000 years ago, God Almighty called Abraham to bring his son, Isaac, up this same hill, and offer him as a sacrifice.

11/24 He Who Offers a Sacrifice of Thanksgiving Honors Me

Over 3000 years ago, a hymn of Thanksgiving was written to thank God Almighty for what he had done for His people. “O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for...ever. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy…And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing… The righteous shall see it and rejoice: and all iniquity shall stop her mouth. Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the Lord.” Psalm 107:1; 21-22; 42-43.

11/17 Now This Thing Became A Sin…

November 19 of this coming week is the anniversary date on God’s calendar of the eighth month, 15th day. And here’s what happened on that day. It’s a short biography of 2 men who lived 2950 years ago. Both were called by God:  one a King of the nation Israel, and another, nameless, and referred to simply as “the man of God from Judah”. This little known historical record, appointed on God’s calendar for this week, reveals a timeless message for any nation who worships God Almighty. More...

11/10 Return To Me and I Will Return To You

(Pictured here are is a 1940’s poem from the World War II photo album of former pastor, Rev. Ernest Stiles, Sr.)

Zechariah 1:1-6: "In the eighth month of the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berekiah, the son of Iddo:
“The Lord was very angry with your ancestors. Therefore tell the people: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Return to me,’... More...

11/3 Stand Up and Praise the LORD Your God!

“Stand up and praise the Lord your God, for he lives from everlasting to everlasting! …May your glorious name be praised! May it be exalted above all blessing and praise! You alone are the Lord. You made the skies and the heavens and all the stars. You made the earth and the seas and everything in them.”

What a praise to the Almighty is recorded here in this wonderful passage in Nehemiah 9! The longest recorded prayer in the Bible, it literally transcends time to minister to us at this appointed day and hour!

Two generations of the Southern Kingdom of Israel, known then as Judah, had been held in captivity in Babylon for 70 years. Their descendants have returned and are rebuilding Jerusalem.

10/27 The Right Time for Me Has Not Yet Come

“The right time for me has not yet come; for you any time is right.” The Words of Jesus in John, Chapter 7. This picture of Abba tulips and Yesterday,Today & Tomorrow Viola bursting forth at springtime in our church garden, illustrates ...that God’s plan and timing is a thing of great beauty and a true miracle to behold!

As Christians, we cannot begin to fathom the depths of God’s perfect timing. Indeed, most of us do not have a clue that God has a time and place for everything, especially anything that has to do with Jesus on this earth.

10/20 The Season of Our Joy 2013

VIDEO LESSON: http://youtu.be/frq-pmXipng

In the 23rd chapter of the Old Testament book of Leviticus, God appointed festivals to teach His plan of salvation through Jesus Christ to the entire timeline of mankind!

Today, we stand in a remarkable place in that timeline. We are able to see God’s plan beginning in the Exodus of the Israelites, knowing that its completion date may be one day soon.  More...

10/13 Everyone Has To Die Once, Then Face The Consequences

VIDEO LESSON :https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=535770346503159&l=8208502422690401144

“The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming--not the realities themselves.” Hebrews 10:1

Using the first new moon following the Vernal Equinox as the beginning of God’...s year, this coming Wednesday, October 16, is an important date on His calendar. It is God’s designated “Day of Atonement”, an ancient shadow of Jesus Christ, given by God 3500 years ago at the time of Moses. In Hebrew, it’s Yom Kippur (“Yom” rhymes with home, “Kippur” pronounced “key poor” accent on poor) In Hebrew Yom means day, from sunset to sunset, as marked by God. Kippur is from the Hebrew word kaphar meaning to cover. Atonement quite simply, means covering. Put the two words together: Day of Covering.

10/6 WATCH!!

Today, October 6, the Fall season of 2013 is upon us. Our hectic schedules seem to take on a life of their own as they expand to include things like football games, school carnivals, and outings to take in all the fall colors. This time of year for me also means multiple weddings, lots of church garden work, and family events. My Dad will be 92 years old on October 27, and we always get together and celebrate. Since I come from a large family, this can be fun but stressful. This year, the addition of “Fiscalopalypse” with the government shut down and Congress bickering is enough to send all of us walking around like zombies!

No, we aren’t zombies, but sometimes we walk around in the darkness, not really alive and awake. We need a fresh perspective to remind us who we are. We need the Word of the Lord!

The awesome sound of the Shofar horn, or trumpet, is heard every day of the month of Elul concluding next month with the Feast of Trumpets, when the final Trumpet is sounded.  The sound of the shofar is very unique, designed to wake us up! There is one long blast, representative of the King’s coronation. Then 3 medium blasts are delivered sounding repentance. 9 staccato blasts awaken the slumbering from complacency. The final sound is one, great big long, loud blast heralding the presence of God .

9/29 In Christ The Whole Building Is Joined Together

The Bible has no many wonderful lessons for us! But which one would God have us study on this 29th day of September, 2013? How do we figure that one out?

It just might be easier than you think. Because God has given us His calendar, and there are appointments with Him and Bible lessons scattered all over it. All we have to do is place ourselves on His calendar, and it all falls... into place.

9/22 For I Am Going To Do Something in Your Days…

Around 50 AD, the early Christian missionaries Paul and Barnabas visited the Roman colony of Pisidian Antioch and established a Christian community of Gentiles there. The ruins still remain to this day in Northern Turkey. Some suppose that the foundations of a 1st century synagogue may have been the very site where Paul gave his first exhortation to them. The large amphitheater, which is still visible, and was there when Paul visited the city.

9/15 The King Is Coming!

Call me crazy, but I just love my Jewish roots. Maybe it’s because I love Jesus so much I just want to know everything about Him. I want to hear what He heard, taste what He tasted; see what He saw. The highlight of my ...entire life was when I visited the Holy Land. I saw the same Sea of Galilee; walked the same Via Doloroa. This is a photo of my brother, Ernie, my mother, Juanita Shuford Stiles, my sister, Angie Old, and my son, Rob Hardy, standing on the Mount of Olives overlooking the magnificent city of Jerusalem in 2002. Absolutely incredible! More...

For over 3000 years, Psalm 27 has been read during this time of the year and the month that follows. That’s because God has designated this month in His Word to be the sixth month of Elul on His calendar. The word ...“Elul” means to search out deeply, as in the heart. This is the month of “soul searching”, and turning back to God.

Yes, in God’s timing, for thousands and thousands of years, this has been the month with special emphasis on getting our hearts and lives in order before the Lord comes again. On God’s calendar, today is the 9th day of Elul. God is reaching out to us, right now, through the power of His Holy Spirit, in His designated month, on His timetable, to search out those things that are stumbling blocks in our relationship with Him, giving us the opportunity to turn away from them and toward Him.

9/1 Who Do You Say I Am?

There sure is a lot going on right now. It’s Labor Day weekend here in the US, the last great hurrah of summer. Everyone’s scrambling for a bit of a warm, relaxing holiday.  On the scientific scene, a 460-mile "megacanyon", 50% larger than the Grand Canyon, was discovered far beneath the frozen surface of the world's largest island of Greenland. A lot closer to home is the news that a supply crisis of lithium means that cell phones, computers, etc. may not be around longer than a couple more years. NO MORE CELL PHONES? More...

8/25 If You Hear God’s Voice Today, Don’t Be Stubborn

I attended the Tellico Plains High School 1968 Class Reunion last Saturday. (Photo by Dennis Britton.) I lived there from 1963-1966 during my earliest teen years. Talk about memory lane! Whi...le most of my recollections of that time were really great, there were plenty of bitter-sweet ones mixed in, too. My friend and classmate, Ginger Hall, had died shortly after her graduation. Also, as I shared with my friends, I realized I had missed being a part of some of their fondest memories.

And we all had changed so much!

8/18 I Will Not Listen To You

This is a picture from the Fontana Community Church’s history photo album. It was taken August 22, 1948 at a Sunday evening vesper service at the Fontana Dam. Worshipping together is a wonderful time for us Christians. So, most of us have rarely, if ever, considered that in the past, God has sometimes chosen not to be a part of the gathering of those seeking Him.

“One day some of the elders of Israel came to me to ask the LORD for advice. This was on the tenth day of the fifth month of the seventh year of exile. The elders sat down in front of me. Then the word of the LORD came to me. He said, “Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel. Tell them ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: Have you come to ask me what you should do? I, the Lord GOD, tell you that, as surely as I live, I will not listen to you.’” Ezekiel 20:1-3. More...

8/11 I Am the Lord Your God

God reigns supreme in the universe. He is calling all the shots. Everything is on His timetable and subject to His plans for mankind. It’s “high-time” we get that straight.

“So I beg you, brothers and sisters, because of the great mercy God has shown us, offer your lives as a living sacrifice to him—an offering that is only for God and pleasing to him. Considering what he has done, it is only right that you should worship him in this way.  Don’t change yourselves to be like the people of this world, but let God change you inside with a new way of thinking.  More...

7/21 Like A Tree Planted By The Water

The trees look strong and content on this little memorial in the middle of Fontana Lake.  Perched above the boat which can deliver souls to the shore, our national flag flies as a symbol of  many blessings.  The angel statue stands as a silent reminder of the continued presence of the Almighty in the midst of it all.

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. 7/14 I See The Lord Seated On The Throne Exalted

“In my thirtieth year, in the fourth month on the fifth day, while I was among the exiles by the Kebar River, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God.” Ezekiel 1:1

This picture reminds ...me of a modern day version of the opening verses of Ezekiel. In this photo of Cheoah River Landing, the mist rising atop the reflection of the water reminds me of the Glory of the Lord. And I see who I really am in the reflection of His Glory!

According to God’s calendar, today is the fifth day of His fourth month, known historically as Tammuz. Today marks the journey of a lifetime for a man who lived approximately 2500 years ago.

7/7 Then You Will Know That I Am The Lord

The flags in this little church keep God’s word literally around us!  “Gird thy sword on thy thigh, O Mighty One! In Thy Glory and in Thy Majesty, Ride on in Victory!” “Hallelujah! 7/1 And They Didn’t Even Know It

This coming Wednesday, on the day before our national Independence Day, the 23rd day of Sivan on God’s calendar, a major nation in the history of mankind was destined for future annihilation by their enemies. And they didn’t even know it.

God’s blessing had been upon them since the days of Abraham. “I will build a great nation from you. I will bless you and make your name famous. People will use your name to bless other people. I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse those who curse you. I will use you to bless all the people on earth.” Genesis 12:2-3. More...

And speaking of joy and the time of the year, on God’s Calendar, today is the 13th day of the third biblical month of Sivan. It is pronounced see-van’. 6/16 There’s Still One More Gift To Open

6/9 Start Counting the Days

While going through some stored material during our recent renovation, I found the original bulletin from the Sunday morning dedication service of this building on September 30, 1951. This is a photocopy of the outs...ide of the bulletin. The words are prophetic and haunting. “After long waiting, we at last have a church home of our own. It is not an elaborate or expensive edifice; it is planned on simple lines and very plain. But it is solidly built to stand the wear of service and of time; not yet complete… 500 man hours… substantial contributions… over all a wise and faithful building committee.

6/2 The Lord Bless You and Keep You

This is the Lord’s Day. It’s also the Lord’s year, and the Lord’s month. Everything that has ever happened and will happen is designated on His calendar for the world He created. According to the ...Lord, today is the 22nd day of the second month of Ziv. Numbers 10:11-36 records this exact time during the Israelite’s long journey to the Promised Land.

We appreciate folks like Alvin, who lay down their lives for their country.

There is also a spiritual Memorial Day, and we celebrate it every week. We remember and honor one who laid down his life for not only His friends, but His enemies. Today we honor Jesus the Christ, Son of the Almighty God. more...

5/12 This Was The Lord’s Doing; It Is Marvelous In Our Eyes

Each day after an 8 hour or so period of rest, our conscious lives begin again. Every day there are questions waiting to be answered. When do we get up? What do we eat? What do we wear? Where do we go? When do we go? Endless and so familiar, we sometimes speed through the decision making process without even thinking.

Today, I’m adding more questions to your daily list. Do you know what day it is?  More...

5/5 On The Twenty Fourth Day Of The First Month

A long time ago, an elderly man stood on the bank of a mighty, rushing river. He had been fasting, and no doubt was very broken and humbled. Being broken was probably nothing new for him.  He had been a prisoner of war for most of his adult life. He had been forced to learn how to live in a nation that was not his own. But his faith in God always remained unshakable, even when he faced certain death at the hands of his enemies. For 60 some years, his testimony of faith and wisdom had influenced ruling kings as well as fellow prisoners in exile. Because of his witness, the current king had just given him and his fellow exiles permission to return to their homeland.  More...

This picture brings back memories of my ancestry. My grandmother, Earie Stiles, loved showing off the firstfruits of her garden. She is pictured here with her grandson, Ernie Stiles, who still looks forward to fresh garden fruits every year. (But I think he likes them a whole lot more when they're from someone else's garden!)

God loves those firstfruits, too. In fact, God’s calendar revolves around times of harvest. In the beginning of the year, in His first month, Abib, He teaches about the “firstfruits” of the harvest. more...

4/21 Eat It With Your Cloak Tucked Into Your Belt...

3500 years ago, in the ancient land of Egypt, God gave detailed instructions for all those who trusted Him. Following His instructions would bring life. Ignoring them would guarantee death.

On the 10th day of the Hebrew month of Abib, also known as Nissan, each family was to select from their flock a year old lamb, without any flaw or defect. It was to be kept until the 14th day of the month, giving the family an opportunity to become personally attached to the lamb. It would not be just any lamb. It would be their lamb.. more...

4/14 In Sync With God’s Calendar

The month of Abib is designated by God Almighty as the first month of the year. "And the LORD spoke unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it sh...all be the first month of the year to you." Exodus 12:1-2. The name of the month is given in Deuteronomy 16:1, where the Israelites are told to keep the Passover in the month of Abib, because they were delivered from the 10th death plague of Egypt on that very day by God Almighty. Along with all the wonderful pictures of Jesus as our Passover Lamb, our Unleavened Bread, and our Firstfruits, many other amazing anniversaries occur during this month..  more...

4/7 Do You Know What Day This Is?

On our calendar, today is the 4th month of April, the 7th day of 2013. We know this because since about 1600, most countries have marked January 1 as the first day of the year. However, it wasn’t offi...cial in Italy and England until around 1750.  more...

(Resurrection Sunday Morning "Sonrise" Service looked extremely doubtful as we battled dense fog and rain at 6:30 am this morning to make it to the top of the dam by 6:45am. We moved the service to a co...vered pavillion, and the rain just stopped! As we were singing and worshipping God, the clouds just seemed to part to let the "Son" thru! And receive Him, we did! This post is the message we shared together.) more...

March 25, 2013: Is There An Esther In The House?

On God's calendar, today is the 13th day of Adar, a memorable day in the history of the Bible. (Using the vernal equinox as a reference point, and the new moon following as the first month of God's year) On this day, about 2500 years ago, the Jewish nation, once a mighty and formidable nation serving one God, was destined for final annihilation by their enemies. more...

3/24 Palm Sunday?

When I was preparing to visit the Holy Land with my father in 1998, my excitement level was max. I could hardly believe I was making the trip. I literally pinched myself over and over again. When our plane touched down in Tel Aviv, my heart was thumping ninety miles a minute!  Then, I began to observe some things I wasn't quite prepared for. There we sat in our plane, alone, in the middle of this huge expanse of concrete. I hardly had time to take it in before we clambored down dozens of tarmack steps, were whisked into vans, and quickly transported to the main airport building, surrounded by mounds of more steps. When I entered the airport, I was surprised to see guards and guns everywhere. Uh-oh, my excitement was fading fast. more...

The Story Behind "How Great Thou Art"

In 1885, a Swedish preacher, named Carl Boberg, wrote the poem "O Store Gud". Translated into English it reads "O Great God". Someone began singing it to the tune of an old Swedish melody. more...
